This and That

I decided I need to be getting up a bit earlier now that school has started. It gives me a good hour in the morning before the kids are up to get online and drink some coffee, which makes the morning go better in general. So today I am using some of these precious moments to blog! Aren’t you lucky?

We had a busy week last week, trying to squeeze in a few more summer adventures before hitting the books again. The boys built a fort (which wasn’t a fort for long, but became a base for some sort of top-secret motorcycle detective agency or some such thing).

We made marshmallow sculptures, then ate them. Except the toothpicks. Because that’s not healthy.

We did some finger painting. I used this recipe to make these from scratch. Super easy– cornstarch, sugar, salt, water, and food coloring– and the recipe makes a nice big batch that was more than enough for the kids and their mommy to have some squishy arty fun.

Bubs put this out in the sun to dry and then used it as a base for a collage. I need to take a picture of it. It’s pretty cool, very fun for an eight-year-old.

Squeezy Girl really had a lot of fun with the fingerpaints. When I was adding the food color, she kept asking for pink and purple. Girly-girl. Anyway, one of the things I really liked about this recipe was that it was edible but it must not taste good b/c she only tried it once before she just went back to smooshing her fingers around in it.

The boys also made pirate masks last week. They’ve been on a bit of a pirate kick lately, Bubs especially.

He’s very fearsome, don’t you think? I especially like the tattoo where is nose should be. :)

Saturday we had our friends Nate and Pam over for a little birthday celebration for Art.

I just have to say, that was a lot of candles. In a few more years I’m going to have to start making him much bigger cakes. Or I could skip the whole one-candle-for-every-year thing.

Nah.

Bubs made Art a handmade card picture thing.

Identical cheesy grins, anyone?

And Stinky actually gave his present to Art on his actual birthday, so I didn’t get a picture. He gave Art a card he made and he put a dollar in it.

Which worked perfectly that day when Art was working and needed a little caffeinated pick-me-up.

This next picture cracks me up. I’ve been trying to come up with a caption for it since Saturday but apparently my creativity fell off the mountain. This is Nate, giving his and Pam’s gift to Art.

It definitely deserves a caption, but I got nuthin’.

And this was my gift to him.

Yes, as a matter of fact it is a tin Star Wars lunchbox. If he can give me a Snuggie for my birthday, I can give him a lunchbox.

And one last picture, not from Art’s birthday party:

That’s Squeezy, wearing her pajama shorts over her regular shorts, her pajama shirt inside-out and backwards over her regular shirt, and her brother’s shoes. Such a fashion plate.

In other, non-pictorial news, we’ve had two days of school and so far so good. I’m really enjoying it and I’m very pleased with the curriculum choices I made. I’m hoping to do a week-in-review post on Friday.

Yesterday, Bubs had to write the word astrobiologist in his science notebook. He’s just getting back into writing in cursive after the summer off, so the word got a bit deformed. Into astroirofiofigests. Which we all thought was pretty funny. I thought Stinky was going to fall over he was laughing so hard when I read that out loud.

Speaking of Stinky, he drew a picture of our family on Monday and informed me that “I think I accidentally made you look like an old Grandma.” I have seen the picture in question, and being that we’re all stick figures with hair and glasses, I’m not really sure what he is talking about. But it made me giggle.

Last night I made these for dinner. Oh my word SO YUMMY. I will be making them again.

I have to go now; it’s time for the little darlings to get up and start the day.

Hope yours is wonderful in every way.
